The Venturi effect describes how the velocity of a fluid increases as the cross section of the container it flows in decreases. It is discovered by the 18th-century Italian physicist Giovanni Battista Venturi.

As air enters the East Oak fire pit, the cross section of the channel through which the air flows decreases, resulting in an increased speed of oxygen supply to the fire. The improved oxygen supply better fuels the flames and creates a stronger and more robust fire.
